President Donald Trump declared the first foreign trip of his presidency a victory as he saluted both the American service members he spoke to Saturday and the allies with whom he met during his trip.
“I think we hit a home run no matter where we are,” Trump said during a farewell speech at Air Station Sigonella, in Sicily. Trump left Italy Saturday and was due to land in Washington overnight.
Trump thanked the service members for their commitment to defending America and the cause of freedom.
“I can think of no better way to conclude our first foreign trip than to spend the time with you right here with the incredible men and women of the United States Navy, and with all of our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and our great civilians who support them,” Trump said.
“You are the patriots who keep the fires of liberty burning,” the president told the crowd at the airbase. “We will always support you. And we will never, ever forget you. You are the metal spine forged out of fires of American strength.”

Trump’s speech focused extensively on the fight against the thread that connected every stop of his trip.
“Our travels took us to some of the holiest sites in the three Abrahamic religions and to gatherings of both America’s oldest and newest friends. We traveled the world to strengthen long-standing alliances and to form a new partnership among nations devoted to the task of eradicating the terrorism that plagues our planet,” Trump said.
“Terrorism is a threat — a bad threat — to all of humanity, and together we will overcome this threat,” said Trump.
Trump said his trip will bring new allies to the war against terrorism.
“I was deeply encouraged to hear from many Muslim nations they are ready to take on the role of combatting terrorism,” he also said.

First lady Melania Trump introduced the president.
“We had a great time here. We did a lot of great stuff,” she said. “My husband worked very hard on behalf of our country. I am very proud of him. This trip has also been incredible for me as first lady.”
